The History of Academy of Dance

The Academy of Dance is an established dance school in the centre of Chesterfield. The school was originally founded by Miss Brenda Blakesley in the 1950s who was an examiner and executive of the International Dance Teachers Association (IDTA).

Miss Judith Littlewood took ownership of the school in 1985 after studying and then teaching under Miss Blakesley. Under Miss Judith’s direction for almost 40 years, the school continued to grow in strength and numbers until her recent retirement in the summer of 2023.

Under new direction, the school is dedicated to honouring the past while infusing fresh and contemporary approaches to dance education. Our experienced teachers are committed to providing a supportive and inspiring environment where students can thrive.

Whether you are a beginner or an advanced dancer, AOD offer a diverse range of classes designed to help you reach your full potential.

Many of former students have achieved numerous professional credits within the performance industry. Some of our alumni have gone on to perform with world renowned companies such as the The Blue Man Group and others have secured roles in West End, national productions and cruise ships.
